PAINTING SPACES - Exterior/Interior Workshop - 26 April, 2026

Time: 10am to 4pm

Where: Hamley Studio of Fine Art, 107 Hunter Street, Hornsby (Participants will create paintings in and/or around the studio)

Tutor: Edward Essing

This workshop focuses on helping students create strong observational paintings using real-world spaces.

Students will move from thumbnail sketching to final paintings (recommended two paintings if outdoors on a sunny day), using both the studio and nearby outdoor spaces as subjects. As a contingency plan or for students interested in depicting interior spaces we also have access to the indoor studio for interior painting.

Key topics include simplifying complex scenes, creating a sense of space through drawing and painting, conveying light through colour and value, and understanding how three-dimensional forms work within a two-dimensional design.

  • MATERIALS

    Sketchbook

Preferably something small but loose paper is also okay.

    Paints
    Baseline set:

    • White
    • A bright yellow (cadmium or similar)
    • A bright red (cadmium or similar)
    • Ivory Black
    • Ultramarine Blue
    • Burnt umber

You can use oil paint, acrylic paint, gouache or dry media like pencil, charcoal or pastel. I have the most experience working with oil and acrylic so please take that into account when choosing your medium.

If painting in oils you will also need:

    • Palette (can be borrowed from studio)
    • Odourless solvent
    • Rags
    • Brushes

    Easels

For this workshop, students may bring their own portable easel or borrow an easel from the studio.

I recommend any student interested in out-of-studio painting to invest in a French box easel. They are heavy enough to withstand wind, can accommodate small to large canvases, have compartments to fit paints and palette and can be folded. Tripod easels are also fine and have the benefit of being lighter.

    Painting surfaces
Any surface is fine. I recommend not painting on anything larger than A2.
